I couldn’t have asked for a better first day to be back in Scotland. It was sunny and warm, in the high 50’s and low 60’s necessitating only a long sleeve shirt.  Leaving Inverness Airport I headed north to the fishing town of Ullapool where I would catch the ferry to Lewis on Friday.  Before getting into Ullapool I made a stop at the Corrieshalloch Gorge, one of the most spectacular gorges of its type in Britain that provides striking evidence of how glacial meltwater can create deep gorges.  It sits along the A835 along the road which leads to Gairloch.  There is a walking path along the gorge which takes you to the 150 year old suspension bridge that stretches across the gorge and over the River Droma.  The bridge only allows 6 people at a time to be standing on it and it does move a bit while you walk over it but  the view into the gorge is amazing.  Back in the day of the Lords of the Isles they would not have been able to cross over the gorge nor is there a navigable body of water running through it.  There are numerous small waterfalls cascading over ancient rocks and one section where you can walk on a plateau of rocks to get close to the water. It was a great day for walking the town, something I had not had much time to do in previous visits.  My room for the night was lovely in a section of the town called Royal Oak.  It was nice to get a better sense of Ullapool by exploring neighborhoods, walking around the harbor, and then driving a ways up the North Coast 500 toward John O’Groats.  The town sits on the shores of Loch Broom.  https://www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/ullapool-p236181
