One of the most beautiful beaches in the Outer Hebrides has to be Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris. The last time I was on this beach it was cloudy and windy and I knew I needed to re-visit it on a beautiful, sunny day. Once again, I arose at dawn and by 5:30 was on the road to Luskentyre on the A859 south from Tarbert. With the exception of a man and his dog I had the entire beach to myself – and he did not stay long leaving me the sole inhabitant of a wide windswept beach. Imagine walking along a broad isolated stretch of sand bordered by tall dunes and surrounded by hills and ancient rocks and not seeing another human footprint for the entire mile length of your walk! It was perfect for photographing and deep thought! The tide was coming in so there was a wide expanse of sand to wander over. The water had made some interesting patterns in the sand which I tried to capture photographically as they represent art as found in nature. It was a perfect morning indeed!
In the afternoon I drove to Leverburgh and stopped at a visitor’s center with well presented exhibits about the people of the Hebrides – and some great books ( my weakness). The drive back to Tarbert took me past expansive vistas of the beaches at Horgabost and their aquamarine water and I was compelled to stop and snap a few more photos even though the light was not good. Tomorrow I head off to the mainland via Skye. I am sad to leave the Outer Hebrides as this is one of my very favorite places to be.
