I managed to head to the beach at the north end of the island this morning around 6:00 AM. I wanted to take photos of the sea and the rocks using a slow shutter speed. Somehow I thought this would give the photos an ethereal look, and it did.  Everything is so prehistoric looking – you expect dinosaurs to come walking around the boulders. The rocks actually date to well before even the dinosaurs! The Lewisian gneiss on the western part of Iona was formed some 2 and 3 billion years ago. Just imagine! The gnarled and contorted nature of the Lewisian gneiss on Iona is stunning! I expect to see even more of this incredible rock when I get to Coll and Tiree next week.

The weather has been improving and tomorrow is forecast to be a fairly rain free and sunny day so an attempt to hike to St. Coloumba’s Bay might be in order. Stay tuned!
