Caught the ferry from Coll to Tiree on this very foggy, rainy morning. A bit sad to leave Coll as it really is a welcoming small community where everyone knows everyone else. The ride between the two islands was about 45 minutes and it took me another 25 minutes to find my cottage. I am inland this time though not far from the beach. Tiree, the most western island in the Inner Hebrides, is 22 miles west of the nearest point on the Scottish mainland, Ardnamurchan. See journal entry It is Britain’s 20th largest island, 10 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest. This low lying island has a population of approximately 650 people, making it considerably more populous than its close neighbor, Coll. After agriculture, the main industries are tourism, fishing, and the service sector. This will be my home for the next several days so stay tuned for more info and photos.
The Lords of the Isles held sway over Tiree, among other Hebridean islands, from the 14th to the 15th centuries. During this period, Tiree was an integral part of the Lordship’s territory, with the MacDonald Lords controlling the region. The Macleans also had a presence on Tiree, acting as bailies and constables in the 14th century (source)
