Wandering this interesting Hebridean island I can’t help but notice the diverse and beautiful landscape. It is a different beauty from Skye or Mull or the Outer Hebrides.  There are no mountains on Coll, just rolling hills that can be rocky or covered in machair.  I am here in June and things are really green now and the flowers are covering the earth in carpets of pink, yellow, purple and white.  The delicate bog cotton sways in the wind and the buttercups stretch as far as the eye can see.  Unlike the other islands where the machair is on the dunes along the beach, here it seems to be covering all of the hills close to the shore as well as on the dunes immediately by the beach. These low hills along the coast are really dunes that have built up over the years. 

There is a terrific community center in the main village of Arinagour which appears to be well used for all sorts of community events. Named An Cridhe the center was opened by HRH Princess Anne in 2012.  An Cridhe means “the heart” and the building is intended to be at the heart of life on Coll.
