Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined finding myself among wild horses roaming the open plains of Utah. Yet, with the expert guidance of Jen Rogers<\/a>\u2014an exceptional photographer and devoted authority on the Onaqui herd\u2014I was privileged to spend three unforgettable days photographing these magnificent animals.
Watching the herd unfold before me was a remarkable experience. The interactions among its members, and the distinct bands led by their individual stallions, revealed a fascinating and complex social structure. Having spent many years around horses, I found myself especially captivated by their relationships, communication, and behavior. What might have appeared at first to be a gathering of wild horses was, in fact, a highly organized society, shaped by bonds, personalities, and an intricate hierarchy.
Jen\u2019s years of observing and photographing the Onaqui herd gave the experience an even more intimate dimension. She knew the horses individually\u2014each by name\u2014and could tell a story about nearly every one of them. Her knowledge transformed the landscape from simply a place where wild horses lived into a world filled with familiar characters, histories, and relationships.
To witness these horses living freely on the open range was both humbling and exhilarating. Three days among them offered only a glimpse into their world, but it was a glimpse I will never forget. The photographs, I hope, speak for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
