The white horses of the Camargue live in the wild wetland region known as the Camargue, a vast delta where the Rhône River meets the Mediterranean Sea.
The landscape itself shapes everything about the horses. The Camargue is not open pasture in the usual sense — it is a shifting world of salt marshes, lagoons, mudflats, reed beds, and shallow brackish ponds. In summer, the ground can bake hard under intense Mediterranean sun. In winter, storms sweep in from the sea and flood large sections of the delta. Mosquitoes rise in clouds. Salt crusts form along the edges of the water. Few domestic animals thrive there naturally, but the Camargue horses evolved to handle it. The landscape makes for stunning backdrops, especially at sunset which is when these photos were taken. Look closely for the foal running with the herd – she’s the dark one!
