“The colors of Scotland will keep you young inside.” This was on the back of a small van and couldn’t be more true! Though not bold and vibrant like those I see in Cuba, the colors here come forth from the land – browns, golds, greens, pinks – gray rocks with pink and white stripes – the rocks here in the Hebrides are ancient, some of the oldest rocks on the planet. I am in awe of the forces of nature that shaped this country millions of years go and bask in the quiet beauty of this land.
I left Harris and the Outer Hebrides this morning on the ferry to Uig (Skye)and felt like I was leaving a part of me behind. Something about the Outer Hebrides draws me to them time and again and I know I will return. The crossing was non-eventful though the ferry schedule was altered and we left an hour later than originally scheduled. That seems to be the norm now for CalMac. Just part of the Island experience!
My goal was to get to Skye and head to Duntulum Castle, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the area was subject to feuds between the rival MacLeod and Macdonald clans. The defences were improved in the 16th century, and by the early 17th century, long after the dissolution of the Lord of the Isles, the MacDonalds had finally gained the upper hand in the area. Getting there was an adventure as the road is a very narrow single track and I was stuck behind a huge tour bus trying to get past another large tour bus. Traffic was held up for 20 minutes as the drivers maneuvered to be able to pass each other. Adding to that were the enormous potholes that I was sure would swallow my poor rental car! But it was well worth it as the view from the castle takes your breath away.
After leaving the castle I headed to Spean Bridge, a good 2 hour and 45 minute drive and to my lodging for the night. I was pleasantly surprised by my accommodations – an entire suite, including a kitchen, on the second floor of a beautiful lodge overlooking Loch Lochy and with views of the Great Glen. This is a perfect place to unwind!
